Lessons Learned from CDM capacity building:
Is there a need to reform international and domestic rules?

The objective of this side event was to identify issues related to current CDM rules and discussed ways to further improve based on experience provided by the designated national authorities (DNAs) of Asian countries. The event invited representatives from Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand as well as a CDM expert from China. They updated the current status of CDM implementation in each country, summarized several barriers for CDM project implementation, and suggested some options for CDM reform.

Lessons Learned from CDM Capacity Building: Is There a Need to Reform International and Domestic Rules?

This side event was held to discuss the experiences gained so far from the IGES CDM capacity building programme and lessons learned from operation of the Designated National Authorities (DNAs), in order to examine the issues and constraints relating to the current CDM rules and to consider practical suggestions for possible future CDM reform. The panelists were DNA representatives from Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand as well as a CDM expert from China. They reported on the current CDM status in each country and identified issues and barriers faced during the operation of CDM projects.

CDM for Sustainable Development - Dream or Reality?

Nearly 240 persons of various academic and cultural backgrounds attended the event. Prof. Akio Morishima, President of IGES, chaired the event. The President of Climate Business Network, Austria and the key representatives from Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Tanzania, and participated as panel members.

The Financing Modalities of CDM Jakarta Workshop
The workshop explored the financial feasibility of CDM projects and considered possible solutions to mitigate existing barriers. Through two days of presentations and discussions, policy solutions were suggested to the project developers and governments of host countries and the financiers' proactive actions and support on the implementation of CDM activities are expected by the project developers.

Participation in UNDP's Regional Energy Programme for Poverty Reduction
The Workshop entitled "Developing a Regional Strategy for the Clean Development Mechanism in the Asia-Pacific region" discussed the need for developing countries to explore defining clear human poverty reduction criteria for the approval of CDM projects and to focus CDM in sectors that are pertinent to poverty reduction, such as rural electrification and transportation. In doing so, it is critical to properly evaluate CDM impacts on the local communities.
