Centred on Implementing ESD Programmes for Sustainable Livelihoods (3-4 Dec. 2009)
IGES held ASEAN+ 3 Policy Dialogues on Education for Sustainable Development(ESD) with UNESCO and UNEP, in Bangkok.
From this workshop, deeper understanding has been gained of how to strengthen locallevel practice of sustainable development and climate change mitigation through the application of ESD models, especially about how government plays a critical role in expanding ESD to wider livelihood and community development programmes.
The Regional Workshop on Education for Sustainable Consumption in China, Japan and Republic of Korea (16-18 July. 2009)
The IGES CDE Project, the Ministry of Environment for Protection (MOEP) and Beijing Normal University in China co-organised a regional workshop on Education for Sustainable Consumption (ESC) in China, Japan and Republic of Korea at Beijing Normal University in Beijing. The workshop brought deeper understanding of sustainable consumption, especially about how government plays their critical role in public education. It contributed to narrowing down the gap between policy and its actual implementation for education for sustainable consumption to build a sustainable society.
FY2008
Symposium for the Launching of the Preparatory Group for the Multi-stakeholder Consortium for Environmental Leadership Development (25 March 2009, Tokyo, Japan)
To strengthen the partnership among different social stakeholders such
as universities, private companies, governments, and NPOs in the field
of environmental human resources, the Ministry of the Environment,
Japan (MoEJ) has taken initiative to establish a Multi-stakeholder
Consortium for Environmental Leadership Development.
To celebrate its launching of the Preparatory Group for the prospective Consortium, MoEJ organised a symposium on 25 March 2009 in Tokyo. IGES, which has been closely involved in the process of the Consortium development, supported the symposium as its secretariat.
The Regional Strategy Consultation Meeting on Education for Sustainable Development in South-East Asia (17-18 Nov. 2008)
The consultation meeting aimed to present and discuss existing policies and strategies for implementing ESD in South-East Asia and to give examples of practice in the form of projects and programmes which share the characteristics of the goals, principles, and values of ESD. The workshop also provided a valuable opportunity to gather diverse perspectives on ESD amongst South-East Asian countries’ governmental officers (from the Ministry of Environment/the Ministry of Education), UN organisations (e.g. UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO and UNU), international organisations (such as ASEAN, WWF and The Japan Foundation), academic researchers and practitioners at schools/ NGOs.
The Regional Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development Policy and Implementation in China, Japan and Republic of Korea
(26 Sep. 2008)
The IGES CDE Project, the Ministry of Environment for Protection (MOEP) and Beijing Normal University in China co-organised a regional workshop on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) policy and implementation at a conference room of Beijing Normal University in Beijing. From the workshop we gained a considerable understanding of how the rapidly developing countries and a developed country are responding or reacting to Climate Change and its education issues which have been addressed by the most developed countries as the great global challenge, although we have found that we still need to go long way to achieve our ultimate goal, a sustainable society.
