International Symposium on a Sustainable Future (focusing on Life Cycle Thinking) 2010

IGES co-sponsored the 2010 International Symposium on a Sustainable Future (focusing on Life Cycle Thinking) (ISSF 2010) organised by the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) held on 11-13 January in Mumbai, India. The symposium aimed to provide a venue to present and discuss research and action based approaches towards achieving sustainability in the energy sector. It brought together policy makers, academicians, research scientists, business leaders and students in the discussions.

International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2009)

The IGES Biofuel Project organised two sessions at ISAP to discuss sustainability issues relating to the use of biofuels in Asia. In the open session, presentations were made by representatives from the governments of India and Indonesia, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and Japanfs National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and IGES, followed by a panel discussion. The other session provided an opportunity for researchers currently conducting biofuel-related studies in the region to discuss sustainability issues with policymakers.

“Research Workshop on Sustainable Biofuel Development in Indonesia: Progress so far and Future Applied Research”
4-5 February 2009, Jakarta, Indonesia


IGES sponsored the Research Workshop on Sustainable Biofuel Development held on 4-5 February 2009 at the Sultan Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, which was co-organized by Capacity for Development-Europe and the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI). The objective was to conduct a multi-stakeholder dialogue in order to better understand biofuel development in Indonesia. Stakeholders from different sectors including academia, NGOs, research organizations, business groups, government, and other areas were invited to present their insights and share research results.

Public Interest Activities Leaders Training Programme Seminar for Kanagawa High School students
"Challenges and Prospects of Biofuels"

On 19 August 2008, IGES conducted a special seminar for High School students in Kanagawa in the course of the Public Interest Activities Leaders Training Programme. The Programme's aim is to foster high school leaders who contribute to society from various aspects such as environment, welfare and education. About 20 students attended a lecture on "Challenges and Prospects of Biofuels" by Dr. Mark Elder of the Programme Management Office Policy Governance Team. After the lecture, the students were divided into five groups to present their proposals to solve environmental problems and social aspects generated from biofuels. A lively discussion and negotiations with other stakeholders took place in the activity and it was a good opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the complex issues regarding biofuels and the importance of diverse perspectives through role play.
