“RESEARCH WORKSHOP ON SUSTAINABLE BIOFUEL DEVELOPMENT IN INDONESIA: PROGRESS SO FAR AND FUTURE APPLIED RESEARCH”

IGES sponsored the Research Workshop on Sustainable Biofuel Development held on 4-5 February 2009 at the Sultan Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, which was co-organized by Co-operation for Development-Europe and the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI). The objective was to conduct a multi-stakeholder dialogue in order to better understand biofuel development in Indonesia. Stakeholders from different sectors including academia, NGOs, research organizations, business groups, government, and other areas were invited to present their insights and share research results.

“The euphoric promotion of biofuels is over” noted Dr. Kusmayanto Kadiman, the State Minister for Research and Development, in his keynote speech highlighting the importance of reliable research to support biofuel-related policies. Ir. Saryono Hadiwidjoyo, representing Elvira Legowo, Director-General of MIGAS, presented an update on the progress of Indonesia's biofuel development policy while Dr. Mark Elder of IGES emphasized that biofuels may have the potential to contribute in energy security, rural development and in reducing carbon emissions but could be counterproductive if they are not produced sustainably.

There were eight (8) sessions during the 2-day workshop covering feedstock development, social and environmental issues, 2nd generation biofuels, biofuel business and investments, and biofuel-related government policies. The multi-disciplinary audience engaged in a lively discussion, and the ideas shared during the workshop served as the catalyst to propose the establishment of a multistakeholder discussion group to consider how biofuels could be developed in a sustainable manner in Indonesia.
