"Role of Corporate Environmental Information Disclosure to Promote Sustainable Production"
Regulative and administrative policies are the main measures to regulate corporate environmental management (CEM) in developing Asia. However, due to the weakness of enforcement capacity, many companies there are still far from being environmentally friendly. Corporate environmental information disclosure (CEID) may act as an effective strategy for enhancing CEM since it can raise environmental concerns of the public and lead to their active participation, which may translate into strong pressures on laggard companies. However, only a small number of large companies are practicing EID voluntarily for better communication with their stakeholders so far. On the other hand, several mandatory CEID programmes have been launched by the governments of the US, EU, and several Asian developing countries such as China and Indonesia. The effectiveness of these programmes for improving a companyfs environmental performance has been empirically proved. In Japan, the Central Environmental Council is recommending guidelines for requiring companies to open up pollution-related information to promote their efforts in pollution control.

The latest trends in CEID in the US, Europe and selected Asian countries were introduced through presentations from internationally renowned experts. The group discussions featuring the distinguished speakers and audience brought better understanding of the role of CEID in realising sustainable production in Asia including Japan.
