IGES Kansai Research Centre International Workshop Series on "Business and the Environment"
Business and the Environment Workshop
Corporate Environmental Management - Striving Perspectives from Asia -
Rapid industrialisation of Asia has pushed the need for more energy and materials at the cost of environmental degradation. Improvement in environmental quality and sustainable development of dramatically transforming Asian economies depends upon the ways the business manage their operations. Well designed corporate environmental management strategies can greatly strengthen other environmental protection efforts set by public polices. There are some success stories to demonstrate government policies and private efforts elicited some companies to move beyond simple compliance. But not all companies have adopted new approaches and corporate environmental management practices vary from sector to sector and country to country.

The international workshop"Corporate Environmental Management - Striving perspectives from Asia"was organized at IGES -Kansai Research Center (KRC), Kobe on 18 October, 2007 to understand how the private sector deal with environmental problems in developing Asia, otherwise booming economies. This workshop attended by more than 80 individuals, representing business, policy makers, academia and community based organizations, examined existing regulations and emerging voluntary approaches in China, India, Thailand and Japan the four countries chosen for IGES- KRC project. The key note address and country presentations provided critical insights into the need for proactive policies that can facilitate business of different sizes to meet sustainable development goals. This inception workshop is a part of new project on Corporate Environmental Management, being implemented by KRC since April, 2007. In depth of review of public policies, analysis on good business cases and roundtable consultations in select countries are also under the purview of ongoing research.
