Regional Centre : Activity Outline

IGES Regional Centre

In pursuit of sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific, the IGES Regional Centre provides assistance for the effective operation of networks as well as coordinating collaborative research with international, regional and national organisations and research institutes.

Relaunched as Regional Centre
IGES has been expanding its network and partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region since the launch of IGES Bangkok Office in Bangkok in 2003. It has worked in close collaboration with UNEP, AIT, and other international, regional and national organisations. In 2011, IGES will formally launch its Regional Centre in Bangkok to continue to strengthen the networks for which IGES provides secretariat services, while engaging in other regional activities.

Major activities
Support for Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network [AECEN]
AECEN is a network of environmental agencies from a number of countries in Asia dedicated to improving performance in relation to compliance and enforcement of national laws and multilateral environment agreements. AECEN operates primarily by twinning countries through South-South cooperation to share good practices and to assist each other in capacity building. AECEN is also strengthening the capacity of environmental courts and the judiciary responsible for environmental cases throughout Asia. In 2009, IGES was selected as the permanent secretariat for AECEN.

Since 2010 IGES has been co-hosting the Regional Hub for APAN, a joint programme of UNEP, with the Asian Institute of Technology-UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (AIT-UNEP RRC.AP).

ADAPT Asia-Pacific : Climate Change Adaptation Project Preparation Facility for Asia and the Pacific
To help nations in Asia and the Pacific obtain financing from these new international funds, ADAPT Asia-Pacific is designed to share information and best practices about climate fund requirements and help governments in Asia and the Pacific build capacity to access the existing pool of international climate change adaptation funds. The project is an integrated knowledge transfer, capacity building and technical assistance programme that links climate funding organisations with eligible Asia-Pacific countries and helps prepare projects that increase resilience to the negative impact of climate change.

Support for IGES Activities in Bangkok and Coordination with UN Organisations Stationed in Bangkok
The IGES Regional Centre has maintained close collaboration with international organisations and research institutes located in Bangkok and other cities in Southeast Asia to provide a wide range of support to the activities of IGES research projects in the same area, including preparation of joint research proposals. The Centre also helps to identify project opportunities being developed by funding agencies located in Bangkok and provides strategic advice on marketing IGES services. Centre staff also provide capacity building support for environmental leadership throughout Asia-Pacific, through Thailand's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and various UN and university networks.
