IGES, Korea Environment Institute sign agreement to help achieve sustainable development

Yokohama, Japan, 29 July 2014

Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the Korea Environment Institute (KEI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) last Thursday to strengthen collaboration on environmental policy research and analysis to bring about sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.

The two research institutes will work together closely on joint research projects and training programmes that address both global and local environmental challenges, including climate change, and produce research that will be useful for policy-making processes.

The outcomes of the IGES and KEI collaboration – which will include joint publications, workshops and symposiums – seek to help Asia-Pacific governments and businesses achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which will replace the Millennium Development Goals at the end of 2015.

Key issues including climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental policy and governance, and sustainable development are some of the main topics researchers from both institutes will jointly address.

Prof. Hironori Hamanaka, Chair of the Board of Directors of IGES, and Dr. Byung-wook Lee, President of KEI signed the MOU on 24 July 2014 in the margins of the 6th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP) 2014 held in Yokohama, Japan.

The memorandum of understanding reinforces IGES’s broader mission to conduct environmental research to realise sustainable development regionally and globally.

KEI is Korea’s leading think tank on environmental policies research and government-appointed review institute for major environmental impact assessment statements. More information regarding KEI and its publications can be accessed via http://www.kei.re.kr.
