IGES, InM and BIISS agree on collaboration to promote research on poverty alleviation, resilience and climate change adaptation

On 26 July 2012, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Bangladesh Institute of Microfinance (InM) and an MoU with the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) to promote collaboration in addressing the linked agendas of poverty alleviation, resilience and climate change adaptation.
The collaborative activities under the MOUs will include joint research activities and publications as well as joint organization of and participation in seminars and symposiums.
As a first joint initiative, IGES, InM and BIISS are developing a research project on the links between microfinance, household resilience and adaptive capacity. The research is particularly pertinent to Bangladesh, which is recognized as a global leader on microfinance innovation and at the same time is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise and floods. The proposed research is part of a broader IGES study on financial innovations for resilience, which includes an assessment of financial services from the perspective of resilience, taking lessons from the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the northeastern region of the country in March 2011. The study has also included a preliminary review of microfinance and climate change adaptation in Nepal and Laos. |
